Young Rewired State 2013 – the film

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013

They came, they saw, they coded. For the fourth year in a row, MadLab has been hosting young programmers during Young Rewired State. This years Festival of Code has been more popular than ever, with an additional three centres in Greater Manchester (MadLab, Media City, Oldham College). MadLab hosted 26 eager young coders during a week in August.

How did they get on? Watch the film below to find out!

Thanks to our centre lead DJ, all the mentors, filmmaker Maria, YRS, and of course all the young participants!

See you next year!

The Manchester YRS group 2013

Once again, it time for us to host a weeklong event for young people to come together and make apps, websites and programmes out of open data: Young Rewired State.

This summer will be our fourth year as a YRS host centre.  From our band of ten young coders in 2009, we have grown to host over 30 for a week of open data hacking at MadLab.  In fact, this year, we’ve also got centres with the BBC at MediaCity, and at Oldham College.  We anticipate up to 100 young people will take part in YRS around Greater Manchester this summer – that’s 10% of the national figure!

After YRS 2012, we were keen to maintain the momentum we’d created as the largest national centre. So since then we’ve hosted monthly events at MadLab and other venues such as The Sharp Project and Hyper Island, attended by around 40 young people each time. We’ve also supported the growth of Code Clubs in primary schools and other venues in the region.  There’s a growing appetite from young people, parents and business to get involved and learn about coding outside of school.

We consider YRS as the highlight in our annual calendar of events aimed at under 18s. And this year it will be bigger and better than ever!

To help make this happen, we’re asking the wider community for help. There are a number of ways which you can contribute –  we’d be very grateful if you could.

- Mentor

Can you give up some time between 5-9th August to help YRS participants? It could be backend stuff, data wrangling, front end or even user testing? If so, sign up here to register as a mentor. It’s a busy week, as teams prepare their projects for the national Show & Tell in Birmingham…

- Participants

We’ve still spaces at MediaCity and Oldham College.  Do you know anyone under 18 with an interest in coding that might want to take part?

- Sponsors

We can’t do any of this without the generous input from the community.  Cash, food, goodies and kit are always welcome.

YRS is always an amazing week, especially here in Manchester.  Please let us know if you can help! Contact

Young Rewired State planning meeting

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Title: Young Rewired State planning meeting
Location: MadLab
Date: 23-05-2013
Start Time: 16:00
End Time: 18:00
Booking: Free, but please use our eventbrite

Join us to help plan for the Young Rewired State Festival of Code 2013.

YRS is a weeklong event (August 5-11) for young people under 18 to get together and make stuff out of public data.  It involves coding, programming, designing and a load of fun.  More details on the YRS website…

2013 will be our fourth year as a host centre for YRS at MadLab.   We’re proud to have been associated with YRS since its inception, and really look forward to another amazing week in August.  We’re also keen to support other venues locally – and to pass on our knowledge and experience.

Who is this event for?

This event is aimed at those planning to be involved in making YRS happen this year.  You could be:

- A volunteer mentor wanting to help YRS participants

- A centre organiser wanting to host YRS

- A local business/agency/organisation wanting to support YRS through sponsorship, kit, people or food!

- An educator wanting to support young people taking part in YRS

Attending this event will be some of the mentors from the previous years, and the centre leads for the Manchester-based YRS venues. So this is an ideal opportunity to find out more from those that have done this before.

NB: This particular event is not aimed at young people or parents/carers.  We will organise something around this later in the year.
