It’s Young Rewired State time again!

The Manchester YRS group 2013

Once again, it time for us to host a weeklong event for young people to come together and make apps, websites and programmes out of open data: Young Rewired State.

This summer will be our fourth year as a YRS host centre.  From our band of ten young coders in 2009, we have grown to host over 30 for a week of open data hacking at MadLab.  In fact, this year, we’ve also got centres with the BBC at MediaCity, and at Oldham College.  We anticipate up to 100 young people will take part in YRS around Greater Manchester this summer – that’s 10% of the national figure!

After YRS 2012, we were keen to maintain the momentum we’d created as the largest national centre. So since then we’ve hosted monthly events at MadLab and other venues such as The Sharp Project and Hyper Island, attended by around 40 young people each time. We’ve also supported the growth of Code Clubs in primary schools and other venues in the region.  There’s a growing appetite from young people, parents and business to get involved and learn about coding outside of school.

We consider YRS as the highlight in our annual calendar of events aimed at under 18s. And this year it will be bigger and better than ever!

To help make this happen, we’re asking the wider community for help. There are a number of ways which you can contribute –  we’d be very grateful if you could.

- Mentor

Can you give up some time between 5-9th August to help YRS participants? It could be backend stuff, data wrangling, front end or even user testing? If so, sign up here to register as a mentor. It’s a busy week, as teams prepare their projects for the national Show & Tell in Birmingham…

- Participants

We’ve still spaces at MediaCity and Oldham College.  Do you know anyone under 18 with an interest in coding that might want to take part?

- Sponsors

We can’t do any of this without the generous input from the community.  Cash, food, goodies and kit are always welcome.

YRS is always an amazing week, especially here in Manchester.  Please let us know if you can help! Contact

Kids and mentors
Now that the digital dust has settled, we’ve reflected on that hectic week in August to create a little report about our YRS adventure. You can download a copy here.

We’ve got some exciting plans up our sleeves, including two hack events during the forthcoming half term at MadLab. Keep an eye on the site for more details!

Can you give a YRS lightning talk?

Josh talks at YRS MadLab 2011

Young Rewired State is about coding. And data. We know around Manchester and Madlab there are lots of interesting folk who can talk about these subjects.

So, we’re asking if people can commit to a lightning talk during the YRS at MadLab – 6th – 10th August (but especially over the first couple of days). (more…)

Young Rewired State is an initiative to give developers aged under 18 the chance to meet, share and build applications. MadLab has been the host to the summer YRS in both 2010 and 2011 – here are some photos from YRS 2011. Whatever your level or experience, If you are aged under 18 and into coding, then come and meet like-minds.

Recently, there has been focus on how computer science education in schools is delivered, and whether it is appropriate to the skills needed. Well, two YRS’ers have been busy writing their own “how-to-code” manual for kids, soon to be distributed by a national newspaper – come along to meet them.

There will be plenty of chance to demo projects and share stories – please make sure you let us and your parents know you are coming.

What is Young Rewired State?

YRS is a initiative that aims to support young developers and coders in using public data to build apps, websites and anything else that people may use. It is about mashing up and getting out there with data people may not have seen or experienced before.

Who can take part?

Anyone aged between 15-18.

Do I need to have skills?

The nature of Young Rewired State means that people will get quite technical. We will welcome people will programming/hacking experience and skills. However, if you are also interested in developing apps, websites or good uses of public data, then by all means come along.

Where else is it taking place?

YRS is taking place at centres across the country. So far, there are centres in Brighton, London, Norwich, Oxford, Birmingham and of course Manchester.

In Manchester we will be based at the MadLab – which is a well-know space for digital collaboration in the city centre.

What will happen?

We will meet on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the MadLab and work together on ideas and developments. On Friday 5th August we will take the train down to London to meet the other teams, show & tell our work and maybe get a prize!

What time will it be each day?

We can meet at MadLab at 10.30am each day, and try and finish around 5pm or so.
