For August, The #Mad_Gng’s theme is detective and crime fiction. The two books up for discussion are Whiteout: Volume 1, written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Steve Lieber, and The Spirit: Femme Fatales by Will Eisner.

Greg Rucka is well known for not only his detective comic series but also his spy fiction with the much praised queen and country and Checkmate. His other praised detective series is Gotham Central, a series he has worked with Steve Lieber on as well. Whiteout in 1999 was nominated for the “Best Writer”, “Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team” and “Best Limited Series” Eisner Awards and in 2000 it was nominated for the “Best Graphic Album” Eisner Award.

The Story involves a U.S. Marshall by the name of Carrie Stetko, who has been exiled to Antarctica. A murder has occurred in her jurisdiction and it’s down to her to find the killer but Antarctica is a ruthless, isolated continent where many haven’t survived.

The second book is a collection of Spirit tales with the focus of stories involving the many “Dames” the Spirit has had the pleasure (if you would always call it that) of meeting, including Silk Satin and P’Gell. The spirit comics by Will Eisner are praised by many and are looked upon as great creative pieces of art and storytelling. The Spirit himself is the epiphany of the pulp detective fiction hero.

As you all know, we have our usual protocol, please bring money for food and a recommended donation of £2 for the madlab.

I hope you can make it.
