The Ghosts of St. Paul’s upcoming events

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Some of you might remember ‘Engels Night‘ held on 18th December last year, where tour guide Jonathan Schofield led a group of intrepid historians through Manchester, highlighting connections with the seedy and politically radical in the area of Manchester that they know so well. Check out some of the photos.

This event was part of our ongoing local history project, ‘Ghosts of St Paul’s’, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the ‘All Our Stories‘ initiative. The project aims to encourage interest and participation in local history and heritage and consists of a range of events during which we get to find out the untold history of the Northern Quarter.

We have some more exciting events exploring Manchester’s industrial heritage. Below is a list of upcoming events. (more…)

The Industrial Revolution was a turning point in world history, touching every aspect of our lives. Particular to Manchester, major technological innovations in textiles and steam sculpted the landscape of the city which are still present today.

What better way to explore the past, draw connections to the current than a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry (MoSI). Join us on the 23rd of March for a day trip in back in time.

As part of the Heritage Lottery Fund, All Our Stories, we will be taking a group to MoSI to excite, experiment and exalt the machines of the past. Opened in 1969, MoSI is devoted to the development of science, technology and industry with emphasis on Manchester’’s achievements in these fields.

We will see a demonstration of the Manchester Mills , following the thread of Manchester’s cotton industry as MoSI presenters take you on a whistle-stop tour of how cotton is processed from its raw state to the finished product – a piece of calico cloth.

We’ll join the Saturday Science workshop –  From Steam to Electricity where you will find out how electricity is made and how a wind turbine works. You will also have an opportunity to make a wind turbine model, try on some personal protective equipment and see how the power station works.

We’ll finish the day looking at Underground Manchester, to find out why clean water and effective sewerage were vital to public health and Manchester’s development.

The day will start at 11am, at the main hall of MoSI. Lunch is not provided, but packed lunches are welcome as well as the restaurant and coffee shop at MoSI.

But if you’d like to know more, please email

This event is happening at the Museum of Science and Industry, not MadLab.

This project is supported by an All Our Stories grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

All Our Stories, a brand-new small grant programme, launched earlier this year in support of BBC Two’s The Great British Story. It has been designed as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in their heritage. With HLF funding and support, community groups will carry out activities that help people explore, share and celebrate their local heritage.
