What’s In The Mix?

In the Mix is a series of music/sound/art commissions and events that will animate the University of Manchester’s cultural resources: Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Museum, John Rylands Library, Jodrell Bank and The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama.

What’s the In The Mix Hack Weekender?

The In The Mix Hack Weekender (8th – 9th June) will bring together audio producers, artists, programmers and creative technologists to tap into the rich seam of resources of the University of Manchester with the aim of exploring new ways of experiencing, using, and interpreting the collection.

But before that – we’ll be holding a social the night before!

In The Mix social

This social is a chance to meet others who’ll be there over the weekend, and to formulate and refine plans you may have. This is not an event in and of its’ own right!

The mixer will take place at MadLab and the Whitworth Art Gallery.

We’ll kick off with drinks at MadLab, and flow into a presentation about web and generative audio, and examine ways of combining creative processes with synthesis and production to create meaningful output.

Dr. Mark Pilkington will discuss his recent electroacoustic composition ‘Turing – Morphogenesis 5.1′
Commissioned by the Computer Science Department, the University of Manchester for the Turing 100 Conference 2012

We’ll also look at platforms which provide locative and context-sensitive audio, as well as audio for the web – both the opportunities, and problems.

Finally, we’ll look at some of the assets the museums offer as starting points for production over the weekend.

There is also an exciting performance by Huw Bunford (of the Super Furry Animals) at the Whitworth Art Gallery. For one night only he will play his Whitworth soundscape. Attendees are welcome to go along. We’ll be leaving MadLab at 9pm for those who’d like to go (we will be arranging transport). This part of the mixer is optional.

We have an updated schedule posted here.
