UK’s First DIYBio Summit

Friday, October 21st, 2011

This weekend (29-30 October), the Madlab plays host to the first ever UK DIYbio Summit – dedicated to bringing biology out of the lab and on to the kitchen table! There’s going to be talks, discussions and workshops with a host of DIY and amateur biologists from the UK, Europe, the US and beyond.

Oliver Medvedik and Sung Won Lim from Genspace (NYC) will be running some genetic tests on (willing!) participants using a home-built lab; Cathal Garvey (Cork) and Brian Degger (UK) will be building trippy LED projectors with Daphnia (Water fleas) and “hacking” some webcams to get a proper up close look, and Dr Patricia Linton from MMU will be leading the charge in building some bacterial fuel cells, ably assisted by Asa Madlab. On top of that, there’ll be a “show & tell” session from the current crop of DIYbio-ers, and an awesome session from bio-artist and Hackteria main man Marc Dusseiller (Switzerland etc.)
