Got a God Delusion?
At this month’s SkepLit, we’re holding a Great Atheist Picnic. We’ll be discussing New Atheism, and the variety of books that have come out since the publication of Sam Harris’s The End of Faith back in 2004.
There are no set texts for this month’s group, but it would be helpful to read one or more of the following: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins; God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens; The New Atheism/God: The Failed Hypothesis by Victor Stenger; Freedom Evolves/Darwin’s Dangerous Idea by Daniel C Dennett; The End of Faith/Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris; The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan (this latter is not technically part of the New Atheist canon but is an excellent read anyway).
We’ll be discussing what we think of these books, whether they accurately represent the views of common or garden atheists (people who haven’t had New York Times bestsellers published on their views!), do we agree with the way we as rational thinkers are being represented in these books and the media, and where we see this new trend in atheism heading in the future.
Everybody is welcome! If you’re of a more religious mindset it’s an opportunity to ask questions, and if you’re an atheist, it’s a chance to meet like-minded individuals in a friendly setting with tea and skepticakes. Please bring sandwiches and other picnic foods to make an afternoon of it. Donations are welcome to help support Madlab’s continued work in the community.
