Those of you who remember our Women in Science Fair from last year will know all about Delia Derbyshire, the female musician who recorded the original Doctor Who theme and was a huge influence on modern electronic music. Inspired by Delia and female musicians in general, this January we’ll be hosting a musical extravaganza! The afternoon will feature a selection of musical/geeky guests, including:

  • Naomi Kashiwagi, representing Delia Derbyshire day, who’ll be telling us about their event and work
  • Electronic musician Lisa, who’ll be demonstrating her equipment and showing us how to loop samples
  • Composer Emily Howard, who uses mathematics to compose classical works
  • Geek songstress Helen Arney, singing some of her lovely science songs

In honour of this musical event, we’ve put together a Spotify playlist of some of our favourite female musicians – the playlist can be accessed and added to here, so whether you’re coming or not, feel free to contribute your own suggestions for our background music at the event. If you’re not Spotify-enabled, please email your suggestions to us.

As always, there’ll be tea and coffee, plus biscuits and cakes (feel free to bring your own if you’re in a bakey mood!) and the standard good Girl Geek company. Come along, meet our speakers, bring your favourite mug, and chase away those post-holiday winter blues with an afternoon of nerdy tunes.

To sign up for the event, tickets cost £2 (including drinks & cake!) and are available here:
